DATA BACKUP
Most people would agree that data should be protected by backing
up to a media outside the computer system, such as tape, floppy
or Zip disk. This prevents data loss in the event of computer failure,
errors in data entry, database corruption and external events such
as fire, theft or malicious damage and can result in days, if not
weeks of lost work if not properly carried out. Many businesses
do not have a unified backup strategy however and may experience
therefore expose themselves to risks such as:
 |
Relying on individual operators to backup their
own work. |
 |
Failure to repair backup devices such as tape drives when
they malfunction. |
 |
Assigning the task to an operator who leaves or changes their
role within the company without instructing a new operator in
the backup procedure. |
 |
Assume that someone, somewhere is responsible for the backup
and that it is being carried out, when no such task has been
assigned or understood. |
A properly designed, documented and maintained backup system is
essential to any business, will avoid these problems and is easily
put in place. We can implement such a system for reasonable cost,
train operators in the use of the system and check it regularly
for effectiveness.
